I am a practicing lawyer admitted in England. I have practiced law for some time at reputed U.K., U.S. and Korean law firms in that order (please see my profile on LinkedIn). I speak Korean and English and I have spent (and continue to spend) a good deal of time in South Korea and England.
My education and professional development to date have taken me to four cities on two continents in a relatively short span of time and put me in touch with people whose backgrounds and preferences have not always mirrored my own. These learning experiences have been interesting and heartening for the most part.
As of today, I am more heavily invested in the legal profession relative to other professions or markets (which is not to say that is where my interests end). I maintain active relationships with those lawyers who are judicious with their choice of words or length of speech; whose preferred mode of engagement is reason as opposed to flamboyance; who have studied law in the past as more than a passing vocational interest; and who have an appreciation for the roles they are expected to play (both within and without the context of their particular mandates at any one time). It is no exaggeration to say that these lawyers have served as a guiding light for me.
More recently, repeat attempts to reframe legal services purely as a monetary endeavour, introduction of outside capital, regulatory loosening, emergence of self-help or technology-assisted solutions (with considerable purported benefits), and lack of legal awareness (even in countries with strong legal systems) have surfaced on the horizon which may or may not have caused a degree of confusion and dislocation within the profession and amongst my colleagues at large.
Regardless, I am reminded on a daily basis that there remain a sufficient number of gifted lawyers whose conception of "legal services" extends far beyond the idea of a concierge service and who have respect for the weight of their word and judgment on the lives of others.
